Y Combinator was the most active U.S. Startup investor by deal count in August, while Nvidia sharply increased its dealmaking pace, participating in nine

Y Combinator was the most active investor in U.S. Startups by deal count in August, according to Crunchbase data. The chip giant Nvidia sharply accelerated its venture activity, participating in nine disclosed rounds of at least $5 million, its busiest month since at least early 2025.
Global venture funding reached $42 billion in August, a 122% increase year-over-year. Seven companies raised rounds worth $1 billion or more during the month.
Active Lead Investors
General Catalyst was the most active lead investor in rounds of $5 million or more, leading or co-leading five deals. Its largest was a $1.1 billion Series A for AI fine-tuning company River AI. The firm also led a $116 million Series E for Cityblock Health and three seed rounds ranging from $10 million to $25 million.
Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and S3 Ventures tied for second place, each with four lead or co-lead deals. The scale of Andreessen's four deals totaled over $1.15 billion, driven by an $800 million Series C for defense tech firm Castelion and a $300 million Series A for AI infrastructure startup Volta. Sequoia's four deals totaled $1.3 billion, including a $1 billion Series B for nuclear energy company Valar Atomics.
Busiest Venture Investors
When including both lead and non-lead participation in large rounds, Y Combinator took the top spot with at least 18 deals. The accelerator commonly invests as a non-lead backer in follow-on rounds for its alumni companies.
Andreessen Horowitz ranked second with 13 deals, followed by General Catalyst with 10. Alumni Ventures and Nvidia tied for fourth with nine deals each. Nvidia's rise is notable; it participated in only four U.S. Rounds in July and one in August 2025. Seven of its nine August investments went to AI-focused companies, including River AI, Poolside, and Groq.
Crunchbase data shows Nvidia participated in a record 59 known startup funding rounds by mid-August 2026, already surpassing its 53 investments in all of 2025. It had also led or co-led at least 11 private-company financings this year.
RA Capital Management and Sequoia each made seven U.S. Startup investments of $5 million or more in August. RA Capital's life sciences-focused deals included LifeMine Therapeutics, AusperBio, and Expedition Therapeutics.
Highest-Spending Investors
Coatue was the highest-spending lead investor in August due to its role leading Databricks' $5 billion deal, which valued the data and AI company at $190 billion.
JPMorganChase and Valor Equity Partners followed, each leading or co-leading rounds with an aggregate value of $2.37 billion. Both were lead investors in defense manufacturer Hadrian's $1.37 billion Series D and home battery provider Base Power's $1 billion Series D.
Nvidia and Sequoia came next, each with $1.3 billion in led or co-led rounds. Nvidia's total came from Poolside's $1 billion financing and Volta's $300 million Series A. General Catalyst and Andreessen Horowitz also crossed the $1 billion mark, with approximately $1.26 billion and $1.15 billion in aggregate led round value, respectively. These figures are an approximation, as investors rarely disclose exact contribution amounts.
Seed Dealmakers
At the seed stage, Y Combinator was again the most prolific investor, backing at least 12 U.S.-headquartered companies in August.
Orbital Edge Accelerator ranked second with eight seed investments, all announced as part of the same August cohort. NMotion and Techstars followed with six seed deals each, while SV Angel 1 recorded five. Crunchbase notes that seed rankings are especially subject to change due to reporting lags for smaller financings.
The rankings illustrate the continued dominance of a small group of large venture firms by deal count, with megadeals determining the top spenders. Nvidia's acceleration highlights the growing prominence of corporate investors with a direct stake in the AI ecosystem.
