Global venture funding reached $42 billion in August, with Databricks securing the month's largest round at $5 billion

Venture investors deployed $42 billion across more than 1,500 startups globally in August, according to Crunchbase data. While this marks a 25% drop from July's $56 billion, it represents a 122% increase compared to August of the previous year.

Seven companies secured individual funding rounds worth $1 billion or more during the month. This ties August with several other months for the second-highest count of such deals this year, following July which saw 13.

The Largest Deals of the Month

The most significant single transaction was for data and AI company Databricks. The 13-year-old firm raised $5 billion, achieving a post-money valuation of $190 billion.

A diverse set of other companies also joined the billion-dollar club. The rounds spanned defense, artificial intelligence, aerospace, energy, and software.

Notable Exits and Acquisitions

Major exits also punctuated the month. Humanoid robotics company Unitree Robotics, based in Hangzhou, China, went public on August 19. Its initial public offering on the Shanghai Stock Exchange valued the company at approximately $9 billion, and its stock price soared 460% on the first trading day.

In acquisition news, Nvidia announced its aim to acquire open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Separately, Milan-based tech aggregator Bending Spoons revealed plans to acquire 13-year-old database company Airtable for around $1.3 billion.

The Accelerating Pace of Mega-Rounds

The data highlights how venture capital is concentrating rapidly on a select group of high-growth companies. Two of August's billion-dollar recipients exemplify a trend of accelerated fundraising.

Databricks increased its valuation by $56 billion in just six months. River AI, meanwhile, raised both its seed and Series A funding rounds within this year, amassing $1.1 billion in total early-stage capital.

This faster cadence was widespread among the month's largest deals. Five of the seven companies that raised a billion dollars in August had last closed a funding round less than 12 months prior. Three of those had completed their previous round earlier in 2026. Investors are quickly doubling down on firms they believe can become the next technology giants.

The report's data is based on information reported to and contained within Crunchbase, with a cutoff date of September 2, 2026. The publication notes that data lags are most common for early-stage venture activity, with seed funding totals often revised upward after a quarter or year concludes.
