International title tops charts in multiple markets

A non-English language series has reached the top ten in more than a dozen countries, the latest example of international originals travelling far beyond the markets they were made for.

Subtitling and dubbing investment made this possible, but so did recommendation systems that stopped treating language as a hard boundary. Once a title surfaces to viewers outside its home market, the audience decides whether language matters.

The commissioning consequence

Platforms have responded by expanding local production across several regions, on the reasoning that a locally made hit now carries global upside. It also produces a deeper catalogue at lower cost than commissioning everything from the most expensive production centres.

The strategy has reshaped where money is spent. Regional production hubs that barely registered a decade ago now anchor significant parts of the majors' annual content budgets.
