Studio shortens theatrical window for mid-budget titles
Films outside the tentpole tier will reach streaming faster under a revised release policy.
A major studio has shortened the theatrical window for its mid-budget releases, moving films outside the tentpole tier onto its streaming platform substantially faster than its previous policy allowed.
Tentpole titles keep the longer exclusive run. The change applies to the middle of the slate, where theatrical returns have been weakest and where the studio calculates that streaming value now outweighs a long cinema exclusive.
Exhibitors are not pleased
Cinema chains have resisted window compression for years, arguing it trains audiences to wait. Studios counter that mid-budget films were already underperforming theatrically and that a faster streaming arrival captures attention while marketing spend is still fresh.
The policy will be watched closely by rival studios, several of which have run similar experiments without formalising them. If the numbers hold up, the mid-budget theatrical window may narrow across the industry.
