Oracle to cut 3,000 jobs in India
Oracle is reportedly preparing to lay off 3,000 employees in India starting in September, which would cut 10% of its 30,000-strong local workforce.

Oracle is reportedly preparing to lay off another 3,000 employees in India. According to a Times of India report cited by Inc42, the job cuts could begin on September 1, though a separate Moneycontrol report suggested a mid-September start.
Sources told Moneycontrol that teams have been instructed to reduce costs. Managers reportedly lack complete visibility into the final list of impacted employees or the precise timing. It remains unclear which specific teams or functions would be targeted.
If this round materializes, it would eliminate as much as 10% of Oracle's 30,000-strong workforce in the country. The company operates multiple hubs across India, spanning Bengaluru, Noida, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and other major cities. The country has become an important centre for the company's operations and is home to large engineering, cloud, support and other teams.
Previous Layoffs and AI Shift
Oracle conducted a major reduction in India earlier this year. In March, the company downsized its India-based staff by nearly 12,000 employees, citing AI-led automation as the reason.
Reports at the time said that many employees received their termination emails at roughly 6 AM, informing them that it was their last working day. Many employees also reportedly said at the time they received no HR call before getting pink slips.
The layoffs come at a time when Oracle is aggressively shifting its focus away from traditional workforce expansion to investing in AI and automation.
Funding the AI Build-Out
Oracle's capital expenditures have surged to fund its AI ambitions. The company spent $55.7 billion on capex in FY26, a steep jump from $21.2 billion in FY25. This spending is directed at building massive data centers and server capacity for high-profile AI clients like OpenAI and NVIDIA.
With its AI expenses all set to cross $533 billion, Oracle has sought to offset its outlay by raising funds through debt and equity while also slashing its operational costs, including headcount.
A Wider Tech Industry Trend
Oracle is not alone in pursuing this strategy. Other major tech firms have also implemented significant layoffs while prioritizing AI investments.
The following table compares recent layoff figures from other companies, as reported in the source:
| Company | Layoff Scope | Number of Jobs Cut | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Global | 16,000 | Earlier this year. |
| Meta | Metaverse Division | 1,500 | As it prioritized AI. |
| Atlassian | Global | 1,600 | 16% of those impacted were India-based. |
| Livspace | Global | 1,000 | 12% of workforce, citing its AI push. |
