Urban Company's operating revenue grew year-on-year to ₹528 Cr in the first quarter of FY27, according to a report. However, the home services platform swung from a ₹7 Cr profit in Q1 FY26 to a ₹92 Cr loss, a reversal attributed to its investment in the new InstaHelp business.

Its net transaction value (NTV), representing the total value of bookings on the platform, crossed ₹1,465 Cr in the same quarter. The gap between NTV and revenue highlights the firm's marketplace model, where it does not recognize the full value of each transaction as its own income.

The Marketplace Revenue Model

Urban Company acts as an intermediary between customers and service professionals. It monetizes transactions through fees charged to both sides. Customers may pay a convenience fee, while professionals pay commissions and platform fees. The platform's commissions and fees accounted for a portion of the average gross earnings of service professionals in the first nine months of FY26, as reported.

Beyond these transaction fees, the business earns membership fees from consumers and sells tools and consumables to its service professionals, a segment it calls its B2B2C product business.

Breakdown of Q1 FY27 Revenue Streams

The firm's revenue for the quarter came from several distinct business lines. The core marketplace for services generated ₹290.2 Cr. Product sales contributed ₹66.2 Cr. The Native brand, which sells home-improvement products like water purifiers, added ₹95 Cr. International services operations brought in ₹65 Cr, excluding its joint venture in Saudi Arabia.

The InstaHelp Gamble

The newest segment, InstaHelp, connects consumers with professionals for on-demand home-help services. It contributed ₹11 Cr in revenue but reported a massive adjusted EBITDA loss of ₹132 Cr for Q1 FY27, making it the largest drag on profitability. InstaHelp processed orders during the quarter, a sequential increase, taking its NTV to ₹53 Cr.

Management does not expect InstaHelp to be profitable for years. During the earnings call, they stated they do not intend to make money from this business over the next five years, viewing it instead as a tool to grow user frequency and enable cross-selling. The average order value for InstaHelp was just ₹138.

The platform's adjusted loss per order for InstaHelp improved to ₹346 in Q1 FY27 from ₹447 in the previous quarter, a sequential improvement. Management linked this to increasing "micro-market density," where higher household adoption in specific neighborhoods allows professionals to complete more jobs within a smaller area, improving utilization.

Operational Costs and Profitability

Running the marketplace incurs significant costs. In Q1 FY27, Urban Company spent ₹51 Cr on B2B2C products for professionals and ₹49 Cr on Native products. It spent ₹18 Cr on service payouts and ₹17 Cr on direct expenses like payment gateways and background verification. After these costs, the firm generated a gross profit of ₹393 Cr.

The core India consumer services business generated ₹67 Cr in adjusted EBITDA. However, the heavy losses from InstaHelp resulted in a consolidated adjusted EBITDA loss of ₹65 Cr for the entire organization. The management estimated that for InstaHelp to break even, professionals would need to earn ₹130-160 per hour sustainably, with consumer pricing eventually reaching roughly ₹200 per hour, implying an average order value of around ₹300.
