AI Startups Drive Record $102B in Q3 2026 Venture Funding
AI-driven startups captured 64% of global venture capital in Q3 2026, raising $102 billion as a record 27 companies secured billion-dollar rounds.

AI-driven startups across the technology stack raised $102 billion in Q3 2026. That sum accounted for 64% of all global venture capital for the quarter. While funding was down 25% from Q2 2026, it still represented a 53% increase from the same period last year. The sector's share of funding was 14 percentage points higher than in Q3 2025. Global venture funding totaled $159 billion in Q3 2026 with close to 6,000 startups funded.
Record 27 startups hit billion-dollar marks, capturing a third of all funding
An all-time record of 27 companies raised billion-dollar-plus funding rounds in Q3 2026. The previous quarterly record was 16 companies in Q2 2026, following 14 in Q1. These 27 massive rounds accounted for approximately one-third of all venture capital raised globally during the quarter. Crunchbase noted, "An all-time record of 27 companies raised such sizable rounds in Q3 2026."
Late-stage funding dominates with mega-rounds concentrated in few hands
Late-stage venture funding reached $105 billion in Q3 2026. Rounds of $100 million and above made up nearly 90% of that late-stage total. The segment was down 23% from the prior quarter but up 73% year-over-year. Eight companies alone secured rounds of $3 billion or more each. Five of those eight were founded within the past four years. Frontier AI labs and data center companies led in count among these mega-raisers. Specific companies raising over $3 billion included Crusoe, Moonshot AI, Mistral AI, Nscale, The Boring Co., and Kling AI. Databricks and Safe Superintelligence each raised $5 billion. Physical AI sectors like aerospace, robotics, data centers, semiconductors, and energy each attracted $10 billion or more.
Early and seed stages show resilience amid broader caution
Early-stage funding showed strength, totaling $40.6 billion. That figure was up 25% compared to Q3 2025. Within this segment, so-called jumbo rounds of $100 million and over represented half of all early-stage financings. Seed funding reached $13 billion globally. A significant portion, $2.6 billion, went to mega-seed rounds of $100 million or more. These large seed rounds constituted about 20% of all seed financings for the quarter.
Geographically, U.S.-based startups attracted $91 billion, representing about 57% of the global total. The San Francisco Bay Area accounted for 24% of all global venture investment. Despite the quarterly decline, Q3 2026 funding exceeded every other quarter since Q2 2022. The $679 billion raised in the first three quarters of 2026 is the highest amount for that period in any year on record.
